How the Navy method actually works
The US Navy body fat method estimates body fat percentage from three or four tape measurements — neck, waist, height, and for women, hip — instead of calipers, a bioelectrical scale, or a DEXA scan. It was developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center in 1984, built by regressing circumference measurements against hydrostatic (underwater) weighing results across a large sample of Navy personnel, and it is still the method the US military uses for body composition standards today. The appeal is simple: a $2 tape measure and this formula get you a number in about the same accuracy band as far more expensive tools, with nothing to buy and nothing that can run out of batteries.
The formulas are logarithmic and unit-specific — the coefficients below assume centimeters, which is why this calculator converts imperial inputs internally before running the math:

The military uses tape measurements instead of a body-fat scale for a practical reason: a scale's bioelectrical impedance reading swings with hydration, what you last ate, and even the specific device, which makes it useless for a hard pass/fail standard applied to hundreds of thousands of people twice a year. A tape measure, read by a trained assessor at fixed landmarks, is cheap, fast, requires no equipment upkeep, and — while not perfectly precise for any one person — is consistent enough across a population to enforce a uniform standard.
Where exactly to place the tape
Measurement technique matters more than which formula you use — a tape placed half an inch off can shift the result by a percentage point or more. Standing relaxed (not flexed), not sucking in your stomach:
- Neck: just below the larynx (Adam's apple), with the tape sloping slightly downward toward the front. Look straight ahead, not up or down.
- Waist, men: at the navel, tape level and snug against the skin without compressing it.
- Waist, women: at the narrowest point of the torso — roughly midway between the bottom of the rib cage and the top of the hip bone, which is often above the navel.
- Hip (women only): around the largest circumference of the buttocks, with feet together.
- Height: standing straight, without shoes.
Take each measurement two or three times and use the average — a single reading is more sensitive to tape angle and posture than the formula's own error margin.
How accurate is it, really?
The honest answer: good enough to track a trend, not precise enough to treat as a lab result. Independent comparisons put the Navy tape method at roughly ±3-4% body fat against DEXA, which is itself considered the reference standard but still carries its own margin of error, commonly cited around ±1-3% and occasionally higher depending on the scanner and protocol (BodyTypeCalc's accuracy comparison). Worked example — male
Height 178 cm (5'10"), neck 38 cm, waist 85 cm, weight 80 kg.
waist − neck = 47 cm. log₁₀(47) = 1.6721, log₁₀(178) = 2.2504.
Denominator = 1.0324 − (0.19077 × 1.6721) + (0.15456 × 2.2504) = 1.0324 − 0.3190 + 0.3478 = 1.0612.
BF% = 495 ÷ 1.0612 − 450 = 466.44 − 450 = 16.4%.
That lands in ACE's Fitness band for men (14–17%). At 80 kg, 16.4% body fat splits into roughly 66.9 kg lean mass and 13.1 kg fat mass.
Worked example — female
Height 165 cm, neck 32 cm, waist 75 cm, hip 98 cm, weight 65 kg.
waist + hip − neck = 141 cm. log₁₀(141) = 2.1492, log₁₀(165) = 2.2175.
Denominator = 1.29579 − (0.35004 × 2.1492) + (0.22100 × 2.2175) = 1.29579 − 0.7523 + 0.4901 = 1.0335.
BF% = 495 ÷ 1.0335 − 450 = 478.94 − 450 = 28.9%.
That falls in ACE's Acceptable band for women (25–31%) — typical for a non-athlete. At 65 kg, that's about 46.2 kg lean mass and 18.8 kg fat mass.

Limitations
The Navy formula was fit to an average military population, so it inherits that population's blind spots. It systematically misjudges body composition at the extremes: a heavily muscled person with a thick neck and small waist often reads leaner or fatter than they actually are depending on which side of the regression they sit on, and a very lean, low-hip-ratio woman can read fatter than a caliper or DEXA scan would show. It also can't distinguish where fat sits — visceral (around organs) versus subcutaneous (under the skin) — which matters more for health risk than the total percentage does. Does this calculator work for very muscular or very lean people?
Less reliably. The formula was built from average recruits, so it tends to overestimate body fat in muscular people with a thick neck and narrow waist relative to that population, and can be a few points off for very lean athletes at either end of the scale. What is essential fat and why can't it go to zero?
